I had the pleasure of recently writing an article “Accurate Master Patient/Person Indexes: Is There a Road Not Taken?” for the California Health Information Association (CHIA). CHIA has an ongoing series about how health information practice has changed, with past presidents providing their personal stories.
Telling the story of how MPIs have evolved over the decades of my career required a serious, yet fun trip down memory lane. Using one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost, and his poem “The Road Not Taken” allowed me to have a little fun while contemplating all the “roads” HIM has taken in our quest for accurate, consistent patient identification data to underpin patient matching within and across systems. I’ve included lots of references to aid readers in considering what road you may want to travel. You can read the attached pdf here, or if you are a CHIA member, use this link.
Hope you enjoy!!
